Vocaltec Communication Limited released the new magicJack Plus, an upgrade to the magicJack, in September of 2011. The company has introduced a number of new features to the device that make it higher quality, and much more convenient to use than its predecessor, the magicJack.
The usefulness of the original magicJack has been substantially upgraded. While the previous edition of the magicJack had to be plugged into the USB port of a powered on computer, the magicJack Plus does not require a computer to work. Instead, the device runs directly through it’s user’s standard modem or router. It can run in this manner thanks to the addition of an onboard CPU and RAM in the magicJack Plus unit.
Another update to the device is Wide Band Voice Technology. This technology, also called HD Voice, provides a greater depth to the sound quality compared to the previous magicJack. This provides users with a richer, more pronounced sound, and mimics that of a traditional landline. Echo Control Technology was also incorporated into the new magicJack Plus. This technology reduces echoes that are sometimes present when calling over a VoIP network. It also helps to reduce static. Since the device no longer requires a computer to function, no software installation is required upon the purchase of the magicJack Plus.
Many of the magicJack’s features have been maintained in the magicJack Plus. The device is still roughly the same size as the previous model, slightly larger than a USB memory stick. The device also delivers the same calling features provided by the previous model, including caller id, call forwarding, voicemail, call waiting, three-way calling, and directory assistance, for no additional charge. Users of the magicJack Plus can still make calls from his or her computer. The magicJack Plus softphone can be installed easily, so users can make calls without a telephone, anywhere a broadband Internet connection is available. Consumers will also be able to keep their current phone number.
With these upgrades in technology and convenience comes a slight increase in price. The magicJack Plus price will cost consumers $69.95 upon their initial purchase of the device. This price includes the magicJack Plus and the first year of service. This price allows for unlimited local and long distance calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. International calls can also be made, at a low, per-minute rate. People traveling internationally can take the magicJack Plus with them, and make calls from their computer back to the United States and Canada for free, from their own phone number.
