There are many video formats and one of them if mkv or Matroska video format. Al most all Apple Mac users store their videos in mkv format as these videos are of high quality. Matroska is usually used for storing high-definition or HD videos. You can’t get that quality with 3GP or MP4. Matroska format can contain number of video and audio files in one container. It is widely used video format and as HD videos are becoming common everywhere so it mkv. But real problem arises when your Apple Mac is not able to play this video format. VLC
VLC is Swiss army knife of video playback.VLC can play al most all video formats you can think of. Till date I haven’t came across any video or audio format which VLC does not support. If I download MP3 or MP4 or any other format, it will simple start playing them 
If VLC is termed all in one media player then it’s not wrong as it will surely open all media formats. It will even takeover QuickTime to play all media files.
DivX Player
DivXPlayer from DivX. If you want the see the power of DivX then you must use this software. If you are also using DivX suit then this software is must. User interface of DivXPlayer is mind-blowing. It can overtake VLC if DivXPlayer also start supporting hundreds of media file formats.
I don’t think I have missed any other mkv player for you Mac. There are many other softwares too which you do same job but I prefer the VLC, however DivXPlayer is also good option if you want to show off
